The "anis of Flavigny" comes in different flavours: aniseed, coffee, cinnamon, jasmine, mint, orange blossom, lemon, orange, mandarine and raspberry. Each flavour is sold in its own distinctive oval box. These boxes are well known to travellers as you can find them at the news stands of French airports and train stations as well as at the gas stations of the French highways. It is also imported to the USA and Canada.
History and Fabrication ProcessUntil the 19th century, it took six months to make a finished product. The seed had to be rolled in sugar syrup, then dried completely before going through the same process again and again until the candy had reach the perfect size. The development and use of machines eased up the making of the "anis" and made the distribution possible on a larger scale. Nowadays, 250 tonnes are produced each year. Each candy weighs exactly one gram (0.04 oz). |
