How to drink ChartreuseIt can be drunken after dinner but more and more people appreciate it as a long drink. It is consumed very cold ideally on ice. They can also be used as a component for some cocktails. Chartreuse History It all started in 1605, when the marshal of artillery for King Henri IV, gave an ancient manuscript titled "An Elixir of Long Life" to a monastery next to Paris as a gift. It was supposed to be used as medication, but the manuscript's recipe was so complex that only bits and pieces of it were understood and used. The manuscript was then taken to the mother-house of the Carthusian Order in Chartreuse, not far from Grenoble. It is in 1737 that the monastery's apothecary, Frère Jerome Maubecthe finally succeeded in unraveling the complexities of the recipe. People loved it so much that it was often used as a drink rather than as a medicine.
The monastery and the manuscript went through a lot of turmoil. However, maybe through their faith and prays, they managed to keep the recipe a secret and make the Chartreuse a worldwide commercial success. The considerable royalties accruing to the order finance much charitable work. The monks of the Chartreuse's monasteryChartreuse monks are contemplative, dedicating their lives to listening in silence to God. Both fathers and brothers lived in the monastery. Both lived lives of prayer and contemplation. Both are properly called monks. The Fathers are priests who have taken holy orders and spend most of their time alone in their cells.
