The cheese is shaped into towers which give it the nicknames of Tour d’Eiffel and Pyramid. The villagers say that Pouligny Saint Pierre Cheese is shaped like the church steeple in Indre, but most people assume that the cheese is meant to symbolize Paris’s famed Eiffel Tower. The region produces approximately 350 tons of Pouligny Saint Pierre Cheese annually.

The cheese is made from unpasteurized whole goat’s milk. According to French cheese standards, Pouligny Saint Pierre cheese can only be made from goat’s milk that comes from three communities. The inside of this surface-ripened cheese is a creamy white color while the outside of it is a deep yellow. The rind of Pouligny Saint Pierre cheese often has a bluish tint. The cheese has the scent of milk and offers the taste of walnuts, white wine, and tarragon.

Although you may search high and low at your local grocery store for Pouligny Saint Pierre cheese, you would be hard pressed to find it. Your best chance at getting yourself a lovely pyramid of this cheese is to visit a gourmet shop or specialty cheese store.
